Further charges laid after scooter rider dies in Eastgardens crash

Police have laid additional charges following further inquiries into a crash that killed a scooter rider in Sydney’s east earlier this year.

About 2pm on Friday 8 May 2020, emergency services were called to the intersection of Fitzgerald Avenue and Bunnerong Road, Eastgardens, after reports of a Mitsubishi Challenger and a Yamaha scooter had collided.

The rider, a 29-year-old man, was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where he later died.

The Mitsubishi driver, a 22-year-old man, was arrested and taken to Prince of Wales Hospital for mandatory testing.

He was taken to Maroubra Police Station and charged at the time. He remains before the courts.

Following further inquiries by officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit, the man was charged with two further offences yesterday (Wednesday 8 July 2020).

The charges include drive vehicle, illicit drug present in blood and dangerous driving occasioning death-driver manner dangerous.

The Hillsdale man remains on conditional bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on Wednesday 29 July 2020.
