The Geelong Preventative Health Survey is undertaken every four years to help us better understand the health status of the Greater Geelong population, and inform evidence-based planning and decision making across the municipality.

The last survey was done in 2017, and this year’s survey provides updated data as well as data for new indicators. Further, the findings this year also include valuable information on what barriers people face to eating healthily. This could help us understand how we can respond to the high rates of obesity, chronic disease and high-risk health behaviours.

The 2021 GPHS was conducted between January and February 2021, with a random selection of 1500 Greater Geelong residents aged over 15 years. Local Government Research Group, an independent research agency, conducted the survey on behalf of the City. A total of 40 questions were asked through telephone interviews, covering a range of health, lifestyle and wellbeing indicators, including physical activity, fruit and vegetable consumption, smoking status, family violence, climate change and mental health during and after the COVID restrictions in 2020. Below is a summary of selected key findings.

Additional data is available for a range of indicators not currently on the Geelong Data Exchange Dashboard. Please click here to see a list of topics and indicators available to request and submit this request form.
