Giving Police More Training And Opportunity

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is focused on supporting our front line Police to ensure they have what they need to do the job.

Staffing is one of the most significant challenges facing Police, as such our Government is examining ways we can fast-track training to 32 Police Auxiliary Liquor inspectors (PALI), providing them with an accelerated pathway to become Constables.

This will result in better use of our resources to serve the community in all high risk areas, not just at liquor outlets.

PALIs currently work in Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine with the sole duty of reducing alcohol related harm by providing direct support to Liquor outlets, including enforcing the new powers provided to police to place individuals onto the Banned Drinker Register.

This accelerated pathway would provide PALIs with greater career opportunities and development options, which in turn will improve retention rates and increase interest in recruitment for PALI positions through broadened responsibilities and powers.

This is a part of a wider Government approach to ensure our community safety resources across departments are used in models of best practice.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Police, Brent Potter:

“We know that Police Auxiliary Liquor Inspectors play an important role in Territory communities and we want to provide them with better career prospects and provide them with more chances to upskill.

“It has become clear that many PALIs want greater career progression and the ability to serve their communities in other ways – that’s why the Territory Labor Government creating a new fast-tracked training course.

“We value every member of the Northern Territory Police and that’s why we are examining this new training course to provide new opportunities to our PALIs and give more support to our front line officers.

“By continuing to modernise training and improving retention strategies for our Police, the community will benefit through having more police on the ground with more powers.”
