Gladesville reserve upgrade to create off-leash dog park

The NSW Government will provide $217,912 to create an off-leash dog park at a Crown land reserve at Gladesville under a project to be managed by Hunters Hill Council.

The project will better activate the under-used Tarban Creek Reserve while meeting the needs of local dog owners.

The Tarban Creek Reserve is currently used for exercise, dog walking, and passive recreation but has capacity for a fenced off-leash dog area to be created to provide a safe space for dogs and their owners to exercise and socialise.

Fencing with double entry gates will be erected around a 380-square metre section of the reserve with seating, shade structures, water stations and waste bins installed and landscaping to create a great area for dog lovers and their pets.

Minister for Lands and Water Kevin Anderson said the funding for the project is being provided under the Greater Sydney Crown Lands Open Space Activation Program.

“This program supports improvements to Crown land reserves in Sydney to provide quality open spaces that can be better used by local communities for healthy recreation,” Mr Anderson said.

“The Tarban Creek Reserve has been a popular informal spot for dog owners but creating this dedicated off-leash area will attract more users to this valuable area of urban green space.”

Hunter’s Hill Council Mayor Zac Miles said the council would be appointed to manage the Crown reserve as part of the project and is looking forward to the community giving its feedback on this project.

“Following community feedback, the off-leash area will be a great enhancement for the reserve with potential for a dog splash pool, a shelter with picnic tables, decorative granite path, and bench seating in tree shade surrounded by garden to provide a pleasant place to sit,” Councillor Miles said.

“Native grasses will be planted for dogs to run through and native reed macrophytes planted to reduce nutrient impacts on the environment.”
