Landholders across NSW are being supported to continue important biosecurity work on-farm, as the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) temporarily adjusts pest control accreditation periods for landholders in response to COVID-19.
The EPA has extended Vertebrate Pesticide Accreditations due to expire, and those that had expired since 1 March 2020, until 20 October 2020.
Western Local Land Services Biosecurity Team Leader, Tim Wall welcomed the exemption saying it will help protect landholders and the environment from pest animals like wild dogs and feral pigs.
“This is good news for landholders in our region who have recently participated in our autumn wild dog baiting program, and those already coordinating their spring campaigns with neighbours.”
The support and adaptability of Local Land Services has been a constant throughout the drought, fires, floods and now COVID-19.
“We’re here when it matters to support landholders and the community with innovative solutions for pest management, with an example of this being our ‘drive-thru’ bait collection which we put in place during our autumn program,” Mr Wall added.
“By changing our approach, we were able to offer a safe, contactless service to limit social contact, while still ensuring landholders were able to collect their baits.”
The agency is currently working on developing an online training solution for Vertebrate Pest Induction Training.
The course covers topics such as baiting techniques, toxicity, storage, transport, legislation and work health and safety. Those completing the course will be issued a five-year accreditation to use 1080 and Pindone for feral pest control.
Landholders are encouraged to call their nearest Local Land Services office to express their interest in the online training, and to talk to a biosecurity officer about immediate options for pest management or planning for the months ahead.
