Government failing Northern Tasmania infrastructure

Tasmanian Labor
  • Four-year delay for Tamar Bridge
  • No Charles St Bridge duplication
  • Government breaking promises
  • Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael Ferguson continues to utterly fail Tasmania’s north.

Labor member for Bass Michelle O’Byrne said the Minister was responsible for chronic infrastructure failures in the state’s north and had broken his Government’s election promises, particularly on the Charles Street Bridge duplication which he clearly never intended to deliver.

“Tasmanians simply cannot believe anything Michael Ferguson says and this Liberal Government continue to break promises and fail to deliver real infrastructure outcomes,” Ms O’Byrne said.

“The Government promised stage 1 construction of the new Tamar Bridge would commence during this current term, but it is yet to move beyond a feasibility and consultation phase.

“Originally scheduled for completion by 2023, it has been delayed by four years, now pushed back until 2027.

“The Government promised the Charles St Bridge duplication would commence in 2018-19, yet it looks like they have completely walked away from this commitment. Has this project been cancelled? Mr Ferguson needs to tell Tasmanians in the north if the government remains committed.

“Tasmania’s north deserves more than broken infrastructure promises and the Government’s lack of delivery is risking jobs.

“Minister Ferguson and the Government must explain why they have broken their promises.

“They cannot continue to let Northern Tasmania down.”
