Peter Gutwein must explain why he has snubbed the tourism sector from important discussions focusing on skills in the recovery of COVID-19.
On the same day the Labor Party was holding an Industry Advisory Council meeting, chaired by a prominent member of the tourism industry, the Government was holding a skills forum where they forgot to invite anyone from the tourism sector.
Labor Leader Rebecca White said given the significant contribution the tourism industry makes to Tasmania, it defies logic that no one from the tourism sector was invited to participate in the Government’s skills forum.
“Tourism in Tasmania before COVID-19 employed just over 17 per cent of the workforce, either directly or indirectly, and there can be no doubt that it has been one of the sectors hardest hit by the virus,” Ms White said.
“The Government’s omission of the tourism sector in their skills forum is not only an oversight, it is an offence to the many hardworking business operators and workers who are struggling to survive during this crisis.
“The Labor party values the role the tourism sector plays in our state and we will continue to engage with them and work constructively to ensure that we can support them to recover from the impact of COVID-19, it would be wise for the Government to do the same.”
