Graduates set to embark on new career with Tasmania Prison Service

Elise Archer, Attorney General

Sixteen new Tasmania Prison Service (TPS) recruits will embark on a new career on Monday after graduating at a ceremony in Hobart today.

The new Correctional Officers have completed 11 weeks of intensive training and will take up posts in a range of TPS facilities including the Hobart and Launceston Reception Prisons, Southern Remand Centre, Risdon Prison Complex and the Mary Hutchinson Women’s Prison.

Attorney-General and Minister for Corrections and Rehabilitation, Elise Archer, congratulated the graduates at a ceremony today.

“As the Minister responsible, I continue to focus on our Correctional Officer recruitment as part of our Government’s ongoing commitment to ensure the safety of staff, inmates and the community,” the Attorney-General said.

“These latest recruits are more proof that this focus is paying dividends, providing a safer and more secure environment for inmates and staff, while also improving rehabilitation outcomes for offenders.

“I would like to personally acknowledge and thank the skilled and dedicated staff working within the TPS and Community Corrections, and wish the new recruits all the best as they begin work within our correctional facilities across the State.”

This graduation is the latest in the Rockliff Liberal Government’s sustained recruitment campaign, which aims to boost the number of people within our corrections workforce.

The Government’s online advertising campaign has successfully encouraged people interested in helping turn lives around, and making Tasmania a safe place, to apply to be a Correctional Officer.

The selection process for the next recruit school is being finalised, with a similar number of recruits anticipated to start their training in early October.

A bridging school is also planned to provide localised training for experienced Correctional Officers from interstate and New Zealand, enabling them to work in the TPS.

Applications for the first recruit school of 2024 are also being accepted now and close in October. To learn more go to
