Grants awarded to protect NT heritage

NT Government

A time-worn building at a historic township will be repaired as part of the Territory Labor Government’s commitment to the conservation of heritage places.

Jones Store – a mud brick, bush timbers and corrugated iron construction – operated as a general store at Newcastle Waters for around 50 years from 1935.

Set at the junction of three major stock routes, the store was once a crucial supply depot for drovers, local pastoralists, and travelling government officials.

An $8,580 grant to the National Trust of Australia (NT) to repair the roof of the heritage-listed store was one of nine projects supported in the latest round of heritage grants.

Other projects include:

conservation works on Chapman House at the Pitchi Richi Sanctuary ($19,675);conservation works at the Royal Flying Doctor Service residence in Alice Springs ($20,000);roof repairs at the Borroloola Meat House ($2,836);repairs to the Pine Creek Railway Station ($16,000);maintenance to the Mine Manager’s House at Batchelor ($10,000);conservation works at the Knotts Crossing Precinct Stage 2 in Katherine ($14,909);sewerage upgrades at Myilly Point ($9,000); andupgrade works at Christ the King Catholic Church in Tennant Creek ($10,000).

Up to $20,000 per application is available to support the conservation of heritage places or objects through the NT Heritage Grants Program. Funding is available for physical conservation work, research and documentation, and interpretive projects.

This 2022-23 projects total $111,000.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Chansey Paech:

“The Territory Labor Government values our heritage, and that’s why each year we invest in the protection and preservation of historically important places and sites.

“Each of the places that will be restored through this year’s grant round are monuments to the Territory’s rich and colourful past and have an interesting story to share with current and future generations.

“Maintaining our connections to our past is a tip of the hat to those whose ideas, innovations and toil helped to shape the Northern Territory into the dynamic, diverse place it is today.”
