Gun shots outside party lead to arrest and charges

Police have arrested a man following a firearms incident in Masterton over the weekend.

Detective Senior Sergeant Philip Skoglund says around 2am on 1 November, a man arrived on Judds Road where he was denied entry to a private party.

“As a result, a fight broke out on the road and the man left in a taxi, making verbal threats as he left.

“The man was dropped off at his destination and refused to pay the taxi driver. He then returned to Judd Road, dangerously driving a dirtbike and holding a firearm.

“He was driving on Judd and nearby streets, then discharged the gun twice.

“First into the air, then in the direction of a group of people outside the address, putting everyone in the area in danger,” says Detective Senior Sergeant Skoglund.

Thankfully, no one was injured from the incident, although it did leave some partygoers shaken.

A 31-year-old man was arrested and charged with unlawfully possessing a firearm, two counts of reckless discharge of firearm and driving while disqualified.

He will next appear in Masterton District Court on 10 December.

“Police take reports of dangerous firearm use and violence seriously. If this occurs, call Police immediately on 111.”
