The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a hazard reduction burn in Myall Lakes National Park near Bombah Point on Monday 8 May 2023.
The burn will treat approximately 406 hectares of bushland to reduce fuel loads and conserve the biodiversity and cultural heritage of Myall Lakes National Park.
Pending appropriate weather conditions, the burn is expected to start mid-morning on Monday, with mop up and patrol continuing into Tuesday.
The area around the proposed burn including Freshwater and Two Mile camping areas within Myall Lakes National Park will be closed from Sunday 7 May to Wednesday 10 May for public safety. These areas will be reopened once mop up is complete and the area is assessed as safe.
People vulnerable to smoke are encouraged to remain indoors and keep their doors and windows closed to reduce exposure.
Hazard reduction burns are essential to reduce bushfire fuel loads to help protect parks, neighbours and communities from future bushfires.
This burn is one of the many that the NSW NPWS is planning in national parks in the Hunter and Central Coast area during Autumn.
All burns around the state will continue being coordinated with the NSW RFS to ensure the impact on the community is assessed at a regional level.
