Hervey Range Tip Shop open for business

Townsville City Council is urging bargain hunters to stop and have a look at the new Hervey Range Tip Shop.

The Shop at the Hervey Range Transfer Station is designed to encourage recycling and reduce landfill.

Townsville Water and Water Committee Chair Cr Russ Cook said the Resource Recovery Centre will allow people to recycle unwanted possessions.

“The Hervey Range Tip Shop gives people a new way to dispose of items that can be recycled and reused,” Cr Cook said.

“The Resource Recovery Centre is expected to divert 1,800 tonnes of material from the waste stream in its first year.

“We expect this to grow to more than 2,300 tonnes a year within 15 years so this will make a significant difference to Council’s waste operations.”

Cr Cook said people will be able to recycle a range of products

“A book collection, a bike, an unwanted couch, a TV and other household items can be left at the Resource Recovery Centre, instead of being dumped to become landfill,” Cr Cook said.

“The shop will help cut landfill maintenance costs and it gives residents a chance to stop and look for a bargain.”

Local Councillor Margie Ryder said residents should plan ahead when they load their trailer, truck, ute or car.

“The Resource Recovery Centre will cut the number of items taken to landfill – so people will offload their recyclables at the recovery centre before they take their waste to the transfer station,” Cr Ryder said.

“It’s important for people to load waste so it can be sorted out easily. Council is encouraging people to load reusable and recyclable items last so they can be removed first at Hervey Range.

“It is free to recycle a lot of household waste and the Tip Shop gives us another way to reuse a wide range of items. Ideally our customers could come through with a load of unwanted items and offload them without having to pay anything at all.”
