High profile artist to lead public art installation project

Port Macquarie-Hastings

A Port Macquarie beach is set to receive a bright facelift, with renowned creative Mulga the Artist visiting the region to lead a public art installation project run by Port Macquarie Hastings Council.

Mulga, also known as Joel Moore, is a renowned Australian street artist, freelance illustrator, muralist, published author and designer. Known for his unique creations and signature style, his creations grace walls and objects across the world.

Mulga will lead the Flynns Beach Mural Project, installing a significant public artwork along the seawall and ramp below the surf club. He will complete the work alongside a number of local artists who participated in PMHC’s Mural Program in 2021. This program was developed to help local artists build their skills in creating large scale painted murals. The groups creation is displayed at Town Beach’s Breakwall HQ.

The Flynns Beach Mural Project will allow this same group to hone their skills and learn at the hands of a highly skilled and experienced artist.

Mayor Peta Pinson says it’s a great partnership – and it’s a privilege to have Mulga working in our region.

“Mulga’s art is vibrant, colourful, unique and fun loving – just like our region. His style is synonymous with our values and our vision for the future.”

“I cannot wait to see what he produces and I know the community is as excited as I am to enjoy this colourful space.”

“He is an inspiring person and it’s a fantastic opportunity for these local artists to soak up his knowledge and get inspired.”

Destination and Cultural Development Manager Jane Ellis says the project is part of a broader tourism initiative from PMHC.

“We wanted to work with a high profile, internationally renowned Australian artist to shine a cultural spotlight on our region.”

“The opportunity to host such an influential artist – and have him contribute to our landscape – aligns with our brand, which affirms that our region is so much more than just a place for a holiday and encourages visitors to savour the moment and connect with what’s important in life.”

“It also has the added bonus of deterring graffiti, which is currently a key goal for our Community team.”

Work begins on Monday the 29th of August, when Mulga and the artists will begin at Flynns Beach.

The media is invited to attend an event to see their progress first hand on Thursday the 1st of September, at 10.00am.
