Police are disappointed and are urging motorists to slow down on the roads after two drivers were detected speeding in the states north-west yesterday.
An 18-year-old man from Ulverstone, who is a P-plate driver, was caught travelling at 130 km/h on the Bass Highway at Lillico.
P-platers are restricted to a maximum speed on 100 km/h, making this a serious breach. He will receive a $639 fine, incur 5 demerit points, and lose his licence for 3 months and will be required to restart the twelve month P1 period.
A 23-year-old man from Moriarty was detected travelling at 93 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Forth Road at Forth. He will receive a $905 fine, will incur 6 demerit points and faces a three-month period of disqualification.
Sergeant Nigel Sheehan from Western Road Policing Services said that speeding is unacceptable at any time.
“It significantly increases emergency braking distances and dramatically increases the risk of death and serious injuries to road users.”
“Safety on our roads is a priority for Tasmania Police, and we will continue to conduct both highly visible and covert operations that target the fatal five – speeding, fatigue, distraction, seatbelts, and alcohol and drugs,” said Sergeant Sheehan.
