Australia now lists 27 terrorist organisations under the
Criminal Code, with the entirety of Hizballah and neo-Nazi group The Base today formally added to the national terrorist listing.
Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews said the Morrison Government would continue to list groups that used violence in pursuit of political, ideological or religious objectives.
“Terrorism is an abhorrent crime. The Morrison Government will do everything in its power to prevent it and stamp out the hateful ideologies that fuel it,” Minister Andrews said.
“From today, both groups are rightly considered terrorist groups; enabling the application of terrorist organisation offences to these groups, and aligning Australia with international partners such as the United Kingdom and Canada.”
Since 2013-14, the Coalition Government has allocated more than $69 million to programs that counter violent extremism in Australia. These programs address all forms of violent extremism, including religiously and ideologically motivated violent extremism.
Last month, the Morrison Government also provided Australian police with important new powers to protect Australians from terrorist offenders who continue to pose a high -risk at the conclusion of their sentence, with the
Counter-Terrorism Legislation Amendment (High Risk Terrorist Offenders) Bill passing the Parliament.
Minister Andrews’ intention to list both groups as quickly as possible was
