Hobart’s rental crisis goes from bad to worse

Tasmanian Labor

A new report shows Hobart’s rental crisis is going from bad to worse, with a drop in both the vacancy rate and new rental listings.

The Domain Report on vacancy rates for October shows Hobart’s vacancy rate fell to just 0.3 per cent – well below the national rate of 0.8 per cent, which is the “lowest point on record”.

Hobart also saw the biggest monthly drop in new rental listings in the country – down 30.3 per cent to just 76 listings.

This is the latest in a long line of reports outlining the crisis faced by renters in Tasmania, with other areas around the state also facing severe rental pressure.

The lack of affordable housing is pushing more and more Tasmanians to the financial brink, with thousands facing homelessness as costs continue to rise.

All Tasmanians deserve a safe place to call home but this government is more concerned about building an unnecessary $750 million stadium than focussing on the needs of ordinary Tasmanians struggling to get by in a cost-of-living crisis.

After years of failing to get the basics right on housing, this government needs to act now to ease the rental crisis in Tasmania.
