Housing supply side focus making impact

Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction

The Rockliff Liberal Government is continuing to support vulnerable Tasmanians through its record investment in social and affordable housing.

The latest Housing Dashboard report shows that in the last three months, over 300 Tasmanian families have been supported into social housing, 95 of them in September alone.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street, said that this was evidence that the increase in supply is beginning to show signs of stabilising the market.

“Our innovative private rental programs have helped to assist over 200 households into both private and affordable rental properties in September,” Minister Street said.

“The MyHome Shared Equity Program has been so successful that Labor is seeking to claim it as their own ‘policy’. It has supported over 280 Tasmanian families in achieving the dream of owning their own home in the last 12 months.

“These welcome numbers reflect the impact of our strong delivery of social and affordable housing, and we look forward to the completion of over 850 homes currently in the pipeline.

“The Domain September 2023 Rental Report outlines that Hobart is now the most affordable city in the country to rent in, with house rents $20 below the market peak as seen earlier in the year. The vacancy rate in Hobart and Launceston remains above 1 per cent, with Burnie lower (0.6 per cent).

“Our Government is committed to supporting vulnerable Tasmanians when they need it most and together with Homes Tasmania, we are getting on with the job of delivering our long-term plan, which will see 10,000 more social and affordable homes available for Tasmanians by 2032.”

The Housing Dashboard is a reporting framework that supports the Tasmanian Housing Strategy.
