The following is a joint statement from Hudson Institute of Medical Research and Monash University.
Hudson Institute of Medical Research is proposed to formally integrate into Monash University, with full operational integration proposed in the first half of 2027.
Monash and Hudson have a strong, longstanding relationship, and we are working together to support our research ambitions and to build on our shared strengths.
Like many independent research institutes across Australia, Hudson has been considering how to respond to a changing research environment.
This proposed integration would bring one of Australia’s leading medical research institutes fully into Monash University, strengthening Monash’s own research capability and reach.
Under the proposal, Hudson would become part of Monash University’s the Sub-Faculty of Clinical and Molecular Medicine under the University’s Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, retaining its identity, expertise and focus, but will no longer operate as a separate legal entity.
For many years, Hudson and Monash have worked side-by-side within the Monash Health Translation Precinct, building a deeply collaborative environment that brings together world-class research, clinical care and education.
Building on this foundation, the Hudson Institute Board approached Monash University to consider a new collaborative working model would be mutually beneficial.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) Professor Robyn Ward AM welcomed the opportunity to further strengthen Australia’s research capabilities.
“The proposed Monash-Hudson integration is aimed at strengthening our collective impact and accelerating the translation of laboratory discoveries into real-world clinical outcomes,” she said.
“Bringing together Hudson’s specialised research excellence with Monash’s global networks and resources would provide a more robust and scalable platform for innovation, continuing our ability to attract leading researchers and partners, and ensures we remain competitive on the global stage.”
As part of Monash University, Hudson would benefit from the scale, stability and global reach of the University. Hudson’s researchers would stay co-located within the precinct, so existing partnerships and day-to-day work continues as they do today.
“Our longstanding partnership has enabled significant advances in biomedical research and translation, supported by shared infrastructure, joint appointments, and strong academic and clinical integration,” Director and CEO Professor Elizabeth Hartland AM FAHMS of Hudson Institute of Medical Research said.
Formal consultation with Hudson staff and their representatives will take place from 17 September to 9 October 2026, in line with Hudson’s Enterprise Agreement.
The final decision on the proposed structure will be made following this period and the full operational integration is proposed for the first half of 2027.
