Hydro building windfarms in Victoria as Tasmanian energy crisis continues 01 March 2024

Tas Labor

As Tasmania sits in an energy crisis and business call for urgent action, the only new generation asset Hydro is building is in a different state.

Hydro has not commissioned a new windfarm it owns in Tasmania since 2013.

However, Labor can reveal that under the Liberals, the state-owned energy asset is planning new generation in Victoria, through the Mt Fyans Wind Farm, being built by Woolnorth.

This has never been announced by the Liberals and it is not included in Hydro’s annual report.

Hydro should be focussed on supporting the long-term growth of the Tasmanian economy by generating enough electricity to supply households, businesses and major industries with the power they need now and into the future, at the lowest price in the nation.

Instead, after 10 years of the Liberals it has lost its way.

Tasmanians built and own the Hydro, so why are we still paying mainland prices for power?

On Sunday, the Liberals announced they would re-write Hydro’s charter – they have been in government for 10 years, and if they were serious about helping Tasmanians, they would have done so by now.
