IDAHOBIT Day 2019

2 May 2019

Mornington Peninsula Shire is celebrating IDAHOBIT Day 2019, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia and from Monday 13 May to Friday 17 May, will be raising rainbow flags in support of the movement and our community.

IDAHOBIT Day is celebrated on 17 May all over Australia where the public join together in the fight against discrimination in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTIQ+) mates, colleagues and families.

The day began as IDAHOT Day in 2004 to capture the attention of leaders around the world and end violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTIQ+ people internationally.

The community is also invited to a FREE community production of ‘Being Frank’, a riveting performance presenting a young person’s fictional experience of coming out as transgender. The play also explores the impacts on the main character’s parents and best friend. The play was developed by Deakin Uni with input and guidance from the trans and gender diverse community, their family and friends. After the performance, our friendly expert panel will be available to answer your questions and then time for a cuppa, cake and chat!

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill said Council proudly represents and celebrates the diversity of our community.

“Mornington Peninsula Shire Councillors are committed to being equality leaders for our community.

“Our support of young people through the Peninsula Pride social group and school support is just one way we demonstrate that commitment.

“I encourage everyone to learn more about IDAHOBIT Day and what it stands for.

“It’s important we support our community and you can show your support by wearing a rainbow pin available from any Shire customer service centre in the lead up to IDAHOBIT Day”, said Councillor Gill.
