In Moodie For Healthier Wetlands And Wildlife

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Despite its name, Moodie Swamp is anything but. It’s one of the most important wetland refuges on the upper Broken Creek in northern Victoria.

The 180-hectare wetland acts like a natural “safe haven” for wildlife. It fills up with large numbers of waterbirds during dry times when other wetlands disappear.

When water reaches the nationally important site, birdlife often responds quickly. Egrets, spoonbills and ibis return in strong numbers. This water also supports rare wetland plants and protects habitat for threatened species.

The Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder (CEWH) has co-funded new infrastructure to more than double water delivery capacity and reduce water losses. Our environmental activities program, funded through the proceeds of trade, supported the project.

The project was delivered through strong partnerships including:

  • Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority
  • Goulburn-Murray Water
  • Victorian Environmental Water Holder
  • local landholders.

This project shows how practical action can make a real difference. More efficient water delivery helps wetlands like Moodie Swamp stay healthy now and into the future.

We know water alone is not always enough. We invest in a range of complementary projects that help address threats and barriers to strong ecological outcomes.

Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder Dr Simon Banks visited Moodie Swamp in June 2026 to see firsthand the works undertaken through the environmental activities project.
