Insight into Student Wellbeing

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Education and Training

More than 30,000 Tasmanian students have taken part in the 2020 Student Wellbeing Survey with results showing that student wellbeing is relatively stable compared to this time last year.

Students in Years 4-12 were surveyed providing an opportunity to gain an understanding of wellbeing during what has been a challenging year due to COVID-19.

We recognise the importance of a strong sense of wellbeing in enabling children to actively engage in learning with optimism and confidence.

The survey data is used to plan and implement programs and professional learning to directly support the wellbeing of all students, including those who have experienced trauma.

While some measures have unsurprisingly seen a small decline, overall the data shows student wellbeing is comparable with 2019.

Key findings include:

  • 96 per cent of students reported they had good relationships and support from their teachers
  • 91 per cent of students felt connected to adults in their home;
  • 86 per cent of students feel safe at school; and
  • 76 per cent of students felt that teachers and students care about each other and treat each other with respect.

Teachers deserve our recognition for this extraordinary achievement of maintaining connection to students through what has been a very disruptive time.

The data set is being shared publically because we recognise that ensuring the wellbeing of students and young people requires collaboration between our schools, families and the broader community.

The data will allow for a focussed effort across Government and the community to improve the wellbeing of children and young people.

This is the first year a Digging Deeper section has been included in the report that identifies particular challenges to some students (by year level and gender).

This data is an important tool to inform our approach to wellbeing in our schools and it will be used to plan and implement programs and professional learning to directly support the wellbeing of all students.

Key to improving student wellbeing is listening to students and understanding their needs, which is why student reference groups will now be conducted to further understand the results from the perspective of children and young people.

The Tasmanian Government is committed to lifting educational outcomes and ensuring that each and every student has the best possible chance to learn, grow and thrive.
