It’s time to reveal secret identities of heroes in Rockhampton

Rockhampton Regional Councillors today joined forces with costumed superheroes in a call to action for the community to nominate a local hero for an Australia Day Award.

Acting Mayor Neil Fisher, Councillor Ellen Smith and Councillor Shane Latcham were joined by Supergirl, Thor and Robin for a light hearted photoshoot in front of City Hall to help Council send out the message – nominate a hero today.

“They say not all heroes wear capes and I think this year this is truer than ever,” Acting Mayor Neil Fisher said.

“While everyone has their favourite superhero, mine is Plantman – no surprises there, but we want to know who your hero is, whether they wear a cape or not.

“In fact, they are more likely to be wearing scrubs, standing in front of a blackboard or supporting their community through an incredibly tough time.

“These awards are an opportunity to say thank you. To let people know that the work they did was valued and made a difference.

“That’s why we’re so glad to join our costumed superheros from the Alliance of Regional Costumers today to put the call out for more heroes.

“There are thousands of people doing great things across the region and nearly all of these go unnoticed or unrecognised.

“I am sure we can all think of someone who went above and beyond to make this tough year a bit better, and it’s those heroes that we want to hear about and celebrate.

“While our usual community events may have looked a bit different this year, we have seen individuals and groups come up with creative and inspiring initiatives to keep our community and sporting groups connected during what has undoubtedly been a very strange year.

“The Australia Day Awards is the perfect opportunity to say thank you to our unsung heroes for their outstanding contribution to the Rockhampton region.”

The 2021 Rockhampton Region Australia Day Award categories include:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year
  • Community Service Award
  • Cultural Award
  • Sportsperson of the Year
  • Sports Official of the Year
  • Community Initiative

Anyone can nominate an individual or group who they believe deserves recognition for their valuable and selfless service to the community.

“The closing date for nominations has been extended to Wednesday, 6 January 2021 so if you know someone who you are proud of, and who has a positive effect on the community, I encourage you to take five minutes to nominate them today”, Acting Mayor Fisher said.
