Jacka to become Australia’s most sustainable suburb

An ACT-first community-scale battery could be coming to the newest stage of Jacka as the ACT Government seeks to grow Canberra’s renewable energy storage sector.

The battery will allow future Jacka residents to access stored energy generated from renewable sources.

The investment into community-scale battery storage system is another example of how the ACT Government is doing the heavy lifting to ensure all Canberrans benefit from a low emission future.

The expression of interest for applications – the first stage of the two-stage tender – was released today.

“The ACT has become a nation leader on climate action, and now we are making it as easy as possible for Canberra households to benefit from the shift to a low emission technology,” Minister for Housing and Suburban Development Yvette Berry said.

“Building Jacka – one of Canberra’s newest suburbs – as an all-electric, solar-powered suburb, will save residents money and set the example of how our future suburbs will be powered.”

Jacka’s newest stage will feature approximately 700 single residential and multi-unit homes and a local centre.

Residents of all dwellings will be encouraged to have rooftop solar and excess energy could be stored locally in a community-scale battery.

A successful tender could lead to Jacka being even less reliant on fossil fuels, leading Canberra towards creating zero emissions suburbs.
