Primary school students from across the Borough of Queenscliffe have joined forces for an environmental clean-up with a twist.
Pupils at Queenscliff Primary School coordinated the ‘Save the Bay’ event on 19 and 20 November and were joined by students from Point Lonsdale Primary School and Queenscliff Kindergarten to also take part in beautifying the Borough. Together, students collected more than 51 kilograms worth of discarded rubbish from around the Borough to help protect our unique natural environment.
Council provided gloves and bags to participants, and will dispose of all waste collected during the event. Councillor Ross Ebbels joined the students on Tuesday morning to kick off the two-hour blitz.
“We’ve got a unique landscape here in the Borough, and it’s extremely heartening to see our younger generation so eager to help protect that,” Cr Ebbels said.
“My children attended Queenscliff Primary, so it’s great to see them taking the lead alongside many other local students by continuing to look after the Borough.”
The students’ goal was to use plastic waste collected from across the town to create the shape of a swan on the school oval, representing nearby Swan Bay and Queenscliff Primary School’s emblem.
Not only is the swan a tangible representation of how much rubbish is littered around the Borough, but it also sets a worthwhile goal – to reduce the size of the swan following each subsequent clean-up, forcing a change in habits from local residents and visitors and thereby reducing waste.
