Kimberley community safety grants now open 10 July

  • $1 million available for community-led projects that reduce crime and improve community safety

Round two of the Cook Government’s Kimberley Community Action Fund (KCAF) grants program is now open, supporting regional communities, businesses, and organisations to invest in community safety and youth engagement projects.

The KCAF is part of the Government’s $40.4 million investment in juvenile justice and wellbeing projects for the region.

The program will provide $1 million in grant funding this year to support projects which reduce crime, improve community safety and security, provide engaging activities and places for young people at risk of offending, and enhance community empowerment.

The funding, administered through the Kimberley Development Commission, is available for everything from improved physical building security and lighting, to innovative ways of engaging families to keep kids safe and off the streets at night.

The first KCAF round in 2022 invested $809,658 to support 12 community projects in the Kimberley region.

These projects included frontline support workers and youth-at-risk of offending working with livestock through intensive workshops; mentoring, sport and recreational activities; and a number of security system upgrades across schools, youth centres and town centres.

Applications are now open and will close on 31 August, 2023.

As stated by Regional Development Minister Don Punch:

“Since starting in my role as Regional Development Minister, I have been taken by the quiet determination of so many people in different ways and in different walks of life to take concrete action to turn these youth crime trends around.

“These grants will help empower people to turn ideas into action.

“This is just one part of our broader plan to break the cycle of youth offending in the Kimberley.”

As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D’Anna:

“This program offers local communities and businesses support for grassroots ideas that address community safety in our region.

“We encourage anyone with an idea that will support our communities to apply for the program and together, we can help to manage these challenges.”
