Tabling Labor’s Donation Disclosure Bill today, Shadow Attorney General Ella Haddad said it’s high time for the Gutwein Government to come clean on political donations.
“It’s because of the Government’s failure to act that Labor is progressing this important reform,” Ms Haddad said.
“We’re calling on all members of Parliament to support our Donations Disclosure Bill to improve transparency and the functioning of democracy.
Labor’s Bill would require all donations over $1000 to be publicly declared, and place spending caps on candidates and political parties’ election campaigns.
“Labor is determined to fix Tasmania’s lax political donation laws which are the weakest in the country. Our reforms will address the massive holes in the current legislation that effectively mean the Tasmanian public are kept in the dark about who political donors are and how much they pay.
“This is a major test for Premier Peter Gutwein, who has backed away from his Government’s earlier commitment to progress donation law reform.
“Tasmanians want to know why. Is it because the Liberals want the big donations they benefit so much from to be kept a secret?
“This is all the more reason for our reforms to be enacted and we call on the Parliament to support Labor’s Donation Disclosure Bill.”
