Labor all over place on stadium

Nic Street, Minister for Stadia and Events

Tasmanian Labor is still at sixes and sevens regarding the stadium.

Previously, Labor said that it would oppose it at every step. But today, they’ve said they’ll vote for it.

Labor’s own ‘No’ campaign has included:

1. Ms White saying “Tasmanian Labor will continue to…stand against the stadium.” (13/5/23);

2. Labor MPs attaching ‘No Stadium’ stickers to their parliamentary vehicles;

3. Tasmanian Labor HQ running a ‘Stop the Stadium’ online petition (it’s still there!); and

4. At least one Labor MP using their office to support the Launceston ‘No Stadium’ rally on 27 August (but no-one turned up to it).

Minister for Stadia and Events, Nic Street, said now today, the wishy-washy Opposition Leader sends out hapless shadow Treasurer Dr Broad to meekly suggest that they will vote for the POSS process, which will enable the stadium project.

“Labor cannot have it both ways: they either support the stadium project, or they do not,” Mr Street said.

“Which is it?

“In contrast, the Rockliff Liberal Government knows that activating the Macquarie Point Precinct will be an economic enabler and gamechanger for our whole State, bringing more visitors, investment, and new jobs to Tasmania.

“But we’re also about aspiration, and that means giving our young people the opportunity of running on to the field wearing an iconic Tasmanian jumper.

“That includes a stadium at Macquarie Point – and despite all the politicking, Labor knows that there will be no AFL or AFLW team without a stadium.

“If you try to stand for everything, you end up standing for nothing, and Labor has once again been exposed for trying to have it every which way on Tasmania’s AFL Team and the stadium.”
