Labor has today announced further initiatives to help resolve housing challenges.
“Taken in conjunction with previous Labor housing announcements, the full plan focus’ on both supply and demand issues to tackle housing access and affordability,” Denita Wawn, CEO of Master Builders Australia said.
“A combination of further financial incentives for low income Australians to get into the housing market through the Help to Buy Scheme, more funding for social and affordable housing, building on the National Housing Finance Investment Corporation, bringing back a national Housing Supply and Affordability Council to better coordinate data, reporting, supply and land use approaches to housing, and developing a Housing and Homelessness Plan, puts the necessary building blocks in place to tackle housing challenges,” she said.
“Labor’s plan puts in place a framework for better coordination across the levels of government and with industry to lead policy, planning and investment approaches in housing,” Denita Wawn said.
“Their challenge will be to ensure that the federal government and state and territory governments work more constructively together to make some real and lasting change,” she said.
“Our members tell us that supply issues, that are a state and territory government responsibility, needs federal government leadership to facilitate and incentivise the resolution of this long-standing problem,” Denita Wawn said.
“Putting housing into the federal infrastructure department brings together key infrastructure levers into the one Department, will support a better implementation effort,” Denita Wawn said.
“Master Builders has been advocating for these measures and commends the response from the ALP on housing policy,” Denita Wawn said.
