Labor will amend Climate Change Bill

Tasmanian Labor

The Gutwein Government’s Climate Change Bill which is due to be debated in State Parliament soon must provide greater detail about the plan for communities, industries, jobs and workers as our state adapts to climate change and decarbonises the economy.

Labor Leader and Shadow Climate Change Minister Rebecca White said Labor will be supporting the Bill but moving a number of amendments to improve the rigour of the Bill.

“There’s no doubt that the climate is changing and we are seeing that right now with the floods situation in New South Wales and Queensland,” Ms White said.

“We need to ensure we have a rigorous framework in place to support our community and industry transition.

“Labor will be moving a number of amendments to the Climate Change Bill to strengthen it and achieve three key things – protect those who are most vulnerable, set out clear plans for a just transition for workers and communities and ensure there is independent oversight to measure progress and to evaluate.

“We need to ensure that the Bill sets out appropriate actions for our state to address climate change that are in the best interest of our children and future generations.”
