Lake Canobolas to benefit from national tree day

Be part of beautifying Lake Canobolas this weekend as part of Planet Ark’s National Tree Day.

Orange Mayor Reg Kidd is calling on everyone in the community to pitch in for a great family day out.

“There’s no better way to spend a sunny winter’s day in Orange than hanging out at the Lake with the family and the community, planting trees to make the place better for the next generation,” Cr Kidd said. “It’s predicted to be fairly mild weather with plenty of sunshine, so take this opportunity to spend the weekend outdoors and enjoying the beautiful landscapes in our region.”

“I will certainly be there on the day, I haven’t missed one in 30 years.

“It’s a great way to meet people and it’s great to have young children plant trees, which will grow as they grow. I’ve attended national tree day with my own grandchildren and we love seeing the trees they planted grow as the years go by.”

National Tree Day is an annual event and this year it will be held at Lake Canobolas from 10am to 1pm, Sunday July 28.

Trees will be planted in the grassland area to the north of the Lake, near trees planted several years previously. Volunteers can park in the main car park, register at the Kiosk then follow the signs to the planting area. The preparation for the site involved a controlled burn by the Nashdale Rural Fire Service to reduce the grass and removal of hawthorn by the Indigenous Work for the Dole Scheme.

“Holes will be pre-dug for the trees to make planting easy for everyone of all ages and abilities,” Cr Kidd said.

“The type of trees planted will include endemic Eucalypts and Acacias which are well suited to the Lake Canobolas environment and will also provide habitat for birds and wildlife already populating the area.”

Nationally last year over 200,000 Australians participated in National Tree Day, planting more than 700,000 plants at almost 3,000 locations around the country.

This brings the initiative’s overall tally to almost 25 million trees planted by almost five million volunteers over 24 years.

A free barbecue and refreshments will be available from the Lakeshore Café who are catering for the even on behalf of council.
