Floating speed machines capable of skimming the water’s surface at 200kmh-plus will thunder to life on Lake Mac this weekend as part of the 2023 Fast and Loud Festival.

The two-day event will feature three races of the top-tier Offshore Superboat Championships around Marmong Point and Warners Bay, Formular GP and Powerboat races at Rathmines, a Saturday night concert by funk-rock superstars Skunkhour and a Show and Shine car show on Sunday at Speers Point Park

“This year’s Fast and Loud will be an adrenaline-filled weekend across three waterfront locations, with our beautiful lake as the centrepiece,” Cr Adam Shultz said, ahead on officially opening the festival on Friday night.

“Everything apart from the Skunkhour concert is free for all ages, including a livesite operating Saturday and Sunday at Warners Bay, and a Sunday livesite ‘Feast Fest’ at Rathmines.”

Sydney-based Formula GP driver Paul Sain, who was getting ready on Friday to push his sleek vessel to maximum speed during the weekend’s races, said it was the thrill of racing that kept him in the cockpit.

“It’s the adrenaline, to be honest,” he said.

“You pull about 3Gs into the corner so it’s all about going fast, no brakes, and not letting off the throttle.”

Reigning Formula 4 Australian champion Lachie Bride said he was keen to defend his 2022-23 season title, with the new season starting this weekend.

“I love the aspect of how you go flat out, floating on top of the water and you can turn on a dime,” he said.

“And it’s always an uneven track because the water is different every time you go over the circuit.”

Entry is also free to the Show and Shine event held 9.30am-2.30pm Sunday at Speers Point Park, including vintage and classic machines, custom cars, hot rods and motorbikes.

“The Show and Shine will also include live music, stalls, food and coffee vans, and it’s right beside the Speers Point Variety Playground, so it’s a fantastic day out for the family,” Cr Shultz said.

Sunday’s 10am-3pm Rathmines Feast Fest will feature food trucks offering a diverse range of cuisines, a kids’ zone, market stalls and live music.

Saturday night’s concert at the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima, in Speers Point Park kicks off at 6pm with local act SF Wrens, followed at 7.30pm by headliners Skunkhour.

The band rose to fame during the 1990s for its combination of funk, rock and rap, touring relentlessly and paving the way for acts like Hilltop Hoods and Cat Empire.

Tickets to the gig are $55 each or two for $70.
