With 99 new appointments made today, the Australian Research Council (ARC) will have more than 300 ARC College of Experts members in 2024.
ARC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Judi Zielke PSM said the new members, along with existing members, play critical roles in the competitive research grant process which supports advancement of knowledge, contributes to national innovation, and delivers significant benefits to the Australian community.
“A total of 319 ARC College members will play a vital role in identifying research excellence, moderating peer assessments, and making funding recommendations under the ARC’s National Competitive Grants Program. It highlights the strength of the research community, and their willingness to contribute to the ARC and the overall research landscape in Australia.”
“ARC College members must demonstrate leadership and research experience, skills in the management of research and qualities of fairness, impartiality, integrity and the ability to work effectively under tight timeframes.”
“The ARC College members are experts of international standing drawn from the Australian research community: from higher education, industry and public sector research organisations,” Ms Zielke said.
Professor Mark Jaksa, a member of the 2020 ARC College of Experts, said being involved in the College of Experts provides one with a deep insight into the way the ARC operates.
“I’ve benefited a lot from being aware of the way that the process works, and I can also provide some advice and mentoring to my colleagues,” said Professor Jaksa.
Distinguished Professor Lyn Griffiths said, “One of the real benefits about being involved in the ARC College of Experts is that you actually get to learn a lot about the latest technology, the latest research but more importantly you also get to make a whole new network of colleagues that you meet on those panels.”
Ms Zielke said she would like to thank the outgoing College of Experts members for their engagement and contribution to the ARC and the Australian research community.
“Without the significant contribution by the College of Experts we would be unable to deliver high quality decision making and ensure our investment is in excellent research.”
ARC College of Experts nominations are called for annually, with appointments for a three-year term. An induction meeting for the ARC College of Experts will be held in Canberra, 30 October 2023.
