Last chance to recognise Stroke Care Champion

Stroke Foundation

There are only a few days left to nominate an inspirational health professional or researcher working in the field of stroke for a 2023 Stroke Care Champion award.

Each year, Stroke Foundation and the Stroke Society of Australasia honour those working in the field of stroke.

The annual event recognises an individual who has gone above and beyond to make life better for Australia’s stroke community. Nominees need to have demonstrated a long-term commitment to stroke of at least five years.

Stroke Society of Australasia President Professor Tim Kleinig said the award was a great way to recognise the individuals who make a difference in stroke prevention, treatment and care across Australia.

“There’s so much work that goes on behind the scenes in the field of stroke. So many people are dedicated to improving stroke care, performing well beyond the call of duty, and we want to celebrate those individuals. Their commitment, research and leadership is instrumental in improving the lives of survivors of stroke and their families,” Professor Kleinig said.

“Stroke is one of the country’s greatest health challenges. More than 27,400 Australians will experience their first stroke this year, that’s one person every 19 minutes.”

Past nominees and winners of the Stroke Care Champion Award have included neurologists, stroke nurses, occupational therapists, speech therapists, physiotherapists and researchers.

Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer Dr Lisa Murphy said the Stroke Care Champion award acknowledges the outstanding contribution to the lives of stroke patients and carers.

“This is a great opportunity to recognise the individuals who are role models in the field of stroke,” Dr Murphy said.

“We have already received some really amazing nominations from people who are paving the way for the future of stroke in Australia, but there’s still time to nominate.”

Nominations close on Friday, June 30, 2023. The winner will be announced at the 32nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the Stroke Society of Australasia in Melbourne from August 22 to August 25.
