One of Australia’s most sustainable suburbs is a step closer, with the first sod turned at the new development of Jacka in Gungahlin.
The development of new, greenfield developments is part of the ACT Government’s comprehensive plan to deliver more housing options for more Canberrans as our city grows.
“Over the next five years, the Government is planning for more land to be available than ever before,” said Minister for Housing and Suburban Development Yvette Berry.
“With the ACT’s population set to reach 500,000 by the end of this decade, the Government is planning for an increase of around 30,000 dwellings in the ACT over the next five years. This will increase the total housing supply in Canberra from around 180,000 dwellings to around 210,000 dwellings.”
The sustainable, all-electric suburb’s newest stage will feature approximately 700 single residential multi-unit homes and commercial opportunities.
“The ACT has become a nation leader on climate action, and now we are making it as easy as possible for Canberra households to benefit from the shift to a low emission technology,” Minister Berry continued.
“Building Jacka – one of Canberra’s newest suburbs – as an all-electric, solar-powered suburb, will save residents money and set the example of how our future suburbs will be powered.”
The northside suburb was first developed in 2013 and is currently home to just over 700 residents.
The first blocks for the next stage will be offered for land for release in 2022-23 as part of the ACT Government’s Indicative Land Release Program.
The construction program for Jacka residential estate starts this month and continues into mid-2024.
