Legendary rocker launches Geelong Seniors’ Program

A rollicking performance from sixties pop icon Normie Rowe provided the ideal launching pad to a long list of events as a part of the Geelong Positive Ageing Program in conjunction with the Victorian Seniors Festival.

The first Melbourne recording artist to achieve a national number one hit, Normie’s peak popularity came at time when the Beatles were dominating global charts and when young singers were joining bands rather than going solo.

The event, held on 3 October 2023 at Moolap’s Club Italia, was sponsored by TLC HealthCare and the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.

The Normie Rowe concert is just one of more than 30 events supported by the City of Greater Geelong stretching from October to early into 2024.

Some of the events supported by the City through Positive Ageing Grants include:

  • Seniors Festival Art Exhibition
  • Old Time Ballroom Dancing
  • Orchestra Geelong’ Seniors Week Concert
  • An afternoon of Country and Western Music
  • The Geelong West Threepenny Community Singalong Spectacular
  • Sketching from Nature with Watercolours and
  • various come-and-try bowls and croquet days.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

I welcome the broad range of activities and encourage all Seniors to get involved.

We’re really proud to be able to support not-for-profit community groups and registered charitable organisations across Greater Geelong in running activities that build social connection.

There’s such a broad range of experiences on offer through the remainder of 2023; I’m sure everyone can find a few activities to get along to enjoy.

Councillor Elise Wilkinson

The opportunities for engagement are particularly important as people age and gradually move away from full-time employment.

We all understand the importance of remaining connected and staying resilient; benefitting mental health and wellbeing within the broader community.

Our demographic of Seniors is growing, so it’s vitally important that groups continue to provide activities that support this part of the community through engaging and entertaining activities.
