South Australians will have the opportunity to help shape a new legislative framework to support the state’s multiculturalism.
The South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission Act 1980 is being reviewed to reflect the changing needs and aspirations of our growing multicultural community.
A discussion paper, supported by a research paper on approaches in other Australian jurisdictions, will guide the engagement process, which opens today and continues until 3 June 2019.
Premier Steven Marshall says South Australia’s multicultural landscape has changed significantly over the years and the reform is necessary.
“It’s crucial that our policy directions address modern priorities and support culturally and linguistically diverse communities in ways that respond to their current circumstances,” said Premier Marshall.
“This Government is committed to strengthening and expanding the scope of the existing Act, which hasn’t been reviewed for 30 years.
“Community input is critical to ensuring that we develop modern legislation that is appropriate, fitting and responsive.”
Assistant Minister to the Premier, the Hon Jing Lee MLC emphasised the importance of the consultations to the review, and called on South Australians to actively engage in the process.
“Multiculturalism is one of South Australia’s greatest strengths and this Government is committed to understanding, respecting and celebrating the cultural, linguistic and religious diversity within our state,” said the Assistant Minister.
“I encourage all South Australians to participate in this significant review to ensure their voices are heard.”
Members of the community can engage in the reform process, either:
· face-to-face at community forums being held across metropolitan and regional South Australia;
· Online, by completing the survey or joining the YourSAy discussion;
· by making a written submission or providing feedback via email.
