Brevity is again king as Armidale Regional Libraries launches its third annual shortest short story competition, Six of the Best.
Community members are invited to take the challenge and write a great tale in just six words.
Entries are now open for this year’s competition and valid entries must use six words only – no more, no less.
The competition is supported by the Friends of the Armidale Library and attracted more than 350 entries in its inaugural year.
The addition of a schools category in 2018 and a significant uptake by local students pushed last year’s total number of entries past 400.
The competition was inspired by the legend that great American author Ernest Hemingway, known for his economical use of words, won a bet by writing the six-word story “For sale: baby shoes. Never worn.”
Armidale Regional Council Mayor Simon Murray said: “The competition has attracted amazing quality and quantity of entries in the first two years and we invite everyone to get involved in the third annual challenge.”
“Everyone has a story to tell and this competition is a great way to explore how people tell their stories in just six words.”
Entries close on 27 September and the winners will be announced from 14 October.
