Western Australians will have the opportunity to explore one of the world’s most extraordinary natural environments when Life in the Great Barrier Reef opens at the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle.

This worldfirst 360 virtual reality documentary invites audiences to dive beneath the surface of the Great Barrier Reef and journey through the wet tropics of Queensland rainforest, the only place on Earth where two UNESCO World Heritage sites meet.

Filmed using advanced 8K underwater camera systems developed by Perthbased White Spark Pictures and its WA technology sister-company Surround Sync, the experience reveals the reef’s hidden world in unprecedented detail.

By revealing seldomseen environments and worldfirst footage, Life in the Great Barrier Reef highlights both the wonder and fragility of the reef, inspiring visitors to support its protection for generations to come.

Life in the Great Barrier Reefis a White Spark Pictures production, made possible through a collaboration between White Spark Pictures, the Western Australian Museum, the National Museum of Australia, and Tmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum.

Life in the Great Barrier Reef is the second in a series of experiences supported by the three museums. The first experience was the award-winningThe Great Kimberley Wilderness, originally launched at several of the WA Museum sites in 2024.

The exhibition will run from Saturday, 27 June until Sunday, 8 November 2026.

As stated by Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk:

“This worldfirst 360 virtual reality documentary invites audiences to dive beneath the surface of the Great Barrier Reef and through the tropics of Queensland’s rainforest.

“Visitors to the exhibition will be able to see up close these remote rarely seen reef environments.
