Mornington Peninsula Shire has commenced work on lighting facility upgrades at Sorrento’s David MacFarlan Reserve and Rye’s RJ Rowley Reserve.
These upgrades (to 100 lux) will help motivate better participation and upgrade non-compliant sporting infrastructure to Australian Standards.
This project is funded through the Shire’s Capital Works program ($125,000) and is supported by the Victorian Government ($250,000) and the Federal Government ($125,000.)
Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill said we are constantly looking for ways to improve our sporting facilities to ensure they are meeting the needs and requirements of the users.
“Thanks to these soon-to-be completed upgrades, local clubs can enjoy playing on fields with state-of-the-art sports lighting in their own backyard”.
Nepean Ward Councillor Bryan Payne said this is a great step forward for the sporting community of the Southern Peninsula.
“Better lighting for our reserves will help contribute towards an increase in training and skills development, ultimately helping the Sorrento and Rye sporting clubs increase their success on the field”.
Nepean Ward Councillor Hugh Fraser said local sport and recreation is a way of life on the Mornington Peninsula particularly for our young people and families, with population growth eminent, an increase in sport participation has followed.
“Night facilities around the Rye and Sorrento communities need to be utilised at the best possible capacity to cater for the ever-increasing demand on our existing facilities”.
This project is part of the Shire’s Sports Capacity Plan (Volume 1 – Sports Fields) and Council’s Active Sports Strategy which both guide the strategic planning for the future provision of sports and sporting infrastructure throughout the Mornington Peninsula.
Construction works are due to be completed by April 2020.
