The Lions Eye Institute is delighted to announce that Dr Fred Chen has been formally recognised as one of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists’ (RANZCO) 2020 Trainers of Excellence.

Each year, the College asks trainees to nominate the supervisor in their training network they believe deserves particular recognition for their dedication to teaching. Supervisors

provide students with the knowledge, guidance and support they need to meet the demands of the rigorous training and assessment requirements of the RANZCO Vocational Training Program. The Fellow with the highest number of votes is formally recognised as a RANZCO Trainer of Excellence.

Australia and New Zealand are known to have some of the best ophthalmologists in the world; a testament to the work and dedication of Fellows like Dr Chen.

Dr Chen volunteers his time in his capacity as a Fellow at RANZCO to supervise, train and mentor trainee ophthalmologists.

“I am honoured to have been elected by my students to receive one of this year’s Trainer of Excellence awards”, Dr Chen said.

“As an educator I feel fortunate to live in a time and a country where there is so much information and research available to inform high quality eye care. I am keen to impart this ever-expanding knowledge to our trainees as future ophthalmologist so they can become leaders in their chosen field.”

Dr Fred Chen is an ophthalmologist and research scientist who established and leads the Lions Eye Institute’s Ocular Tissue Engineering Laboratory.

Dr Chen’s areas of expertise include retinal detachment repair, macular surgery, retinal imaging, treatment of various forms of macular degeneration, stargardt disease, retinitis pigmentosa and clinical trials of new drugs and retinal lasers.

His research teams are involved in testing of new treatments in age-related macular degeneration, high resolution retinal imaging, monitoring of inherited retinal diseases, the application of stem cell technology and the development of personalised medicine.
