Lobster Men claw back onto television screens

Elise Archer,Minister for the Arts

The Tasmanian Government is committed to supporting the State’s world renowned cultural and creative industries.

I am delighted to announce the internationally loved Tasmanian television series, Aussie Lobster Men, will return to our screens next month for a third season.

Our Government is a proud partner with the Discovery Channel and we have invested $80,000 for season 3 of the show, which is expected to generate an economic return of more than $260,000 to Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Government has provided $420,000 in funding support for the show since it began, helping to create 42 jobs for Tasmanian filmmakers and resulting in an economic injection of $1.2 million to the State’s economy.

This season of Aussie Lobster Men will explore the unprecedented time for Tasmania’s rock lobster trade due to COVID-19, showing not only the treacherous tales of life at sea but also the resilience of Tasmanians working in the industry as they navigate the current challenges.

Winning Post Productions (based in Hobart) and Freebird Entertainment are to be commended for their quick and creative response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This new series explores the realities faced by lobster fishermen across Tasmania – and for the first time – Western Australia, sharing inspiring stories and engaging local characters that bring this unique profession to life,” said Darren Chau, Director of Factual Content and Channels, Discovery ANZ.

“Discovery Australia is committed to investing significantly in Australian productions, and we’re pleased to partner with the Tasmanian Government through Screen Tasmania to bring more Aussie Lobster Men to local and global audiences.”

As Minister for the Arts, I am proud of the support our Government has provided to Tasmania’s arts and cultural sector through COVID-19. In fact, Tasmania has provided the largest level of assistance for the cultural and creative sector per capita when compared to other states such as New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

Aussie Lobster Men season 3 will be available to stream or watch Wednesdays from 5 August 2020 at 8.30pm on the Discovery Channel.
