Major Project Progressing to Provide More

Accommodation for Hospital Workers

4 April 2022

Construction is progressing on the $25 million Alice Springs Hospital Staff Accommodation Project, with concrete for the fifth and final floor poured this month.

Territory company Whittaker Street Developments are constructing the Major Project which will provide increased residential accommodation options for hospital workers in the Red Centre.

The precinct is centrally located between Todd Street and South Terrace, and consists of:

· 41 one bedroom units;

· 20 two bedroom units; and

· 10 three bedroom units.

The development also includes undercover car parking, a swimming pool, BBQ and outdoor eating areas, gymnasium, undercover children’s play area and a central waste disposal area.

The Major Project has helped support 110 jobs during construction, and it is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Once finished, the facility will play a key role in attracting and retaining key health professionals and staff in Central Australia.

Attracting and retaining private investment is a key strategy of the Territory Labor Government to create more jobs and grow a $40 billion economy by 2030.

Quotes from Chief Minister Michael Gunner:

“This is a $25 million private investment – and it has had all of the positive flow on benefits we expect from a Major Project.”

“It has helped create jobs and a pipeline of work for the local construction industry. It has also leveraged Alice Springs as a professional destination for health workers, and it will help retain new and existing staff.”

Quotes from Minister for Health Natasha Fyles:

“We value our health staff who work tirelessly to care for the community, and being able to provide dedicated residential accommodation in the heart of Alice will provide support for those working in the Red Centre.

“The Territory provides fantastic opportunities to undertake training and upskill, and we want to keep investing in our workers so that we can ensure the very best care and outcomes for Territorians.”
