Major Success for Tasmania’s Youth Climate Leaders

Peter Gutwein,Premier & Minister for Climate Change

Tasmania is a leader in climate action and so it is no surprise to see Huonville High School, in partnership with Greening Australia, selected as National winners of the Energy Globe Award – one of the most important awards for sustainability world-wide, for the Tasmanian Youth Climate Leaders’ Program.

The Tasmanian Youth Climate Leaders’ Program presents students with a unique opportunity to take on leadership roles to address climate change and sustainability issues faced by their local Tasmanian communities.

The students identify local issues and problems, and implement significant actions including nature-based solutions, food security, sustainable transport and energy efficiency. The Program has now grown to include around 800 students from 30 schools state-wide.

The Tasmanian Government is pursuing a range of opportunities to lead Australia in the transition to a low-emissions economy, powered by Tasmania’s locally-produced renewable energy. This includes a commitment to double our renewable energy by 2040 and fast-track a renewable hydrogen industry in Tasmania.

Having achieved our target of net zero emissions by 2050 for the last four years in a row, we are conducting a detailed analysis of future emissions, to determine if we can set a more ambitious target.

We will also look to strengthen Tasmania’s current climate change legislation, in consultation with the community, with a Terms of Reference currently being drafted.

Congratulations again to all those involved in the Tasmanian Youth Climate Leaders’ Program, your award is well deserved and highlights Tasmania’s international recognition for action on climate change.
