An unlicensed driver allegedly caught speeding twice in a day is among a number of speeding motorists fined by police across NSW over the weekend.
About 4.45am yesterday (Sunday 21 June 2020), Traffic and Highway Patrol (THPC) officers stopped a Holden Commodore V8 on Silver City Highway, about 40km north of Wentworth, after allegedly detecting the vehicle at 164km/h in a signposted 110km/h zone.
The driver, a 35-year-old man, who had his 13-year-old son in the car, was fined for exceeding the speed limit over 45km/h and driving with an expired licence.
About 6pm the same day, police allegedly detected the same vehicle travelling at 186km/h in a signposted 110km/h zone on the Silver City Highway, 35km south of Broken Hill.
The man, again accompanied by his son, was issued a Field Court Attendance Notice for exceed speed more than 45km/ph, drive while unlicensed, and drive at speed dangerous. His vehicle was impounded, and a child at risk notification has been made.
He is due to appear in Broken Hill Local Court on Tuesday 11 August 2020.
Commander of Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Assistant Commissioner Karen Webb says some drivers aren’t getting the message.
“Speeding is not only illegal but selfish, as you’re endangering the lives of your passengers and every road user,” said Assistant Commissioner Webb.
“As you see in the case of the driver allegedly caught speeding twice, officers are out in force across the state. And speeding will not be tolerated.”
Across the state over the weekend, a number of other road users were allegedly caught speeding:
- About 5.45pm yesterday (Sunday 21 June 2020), a motorcyclist was allegedly detected travelling at 122km/h in a signposted 70km/h zone, on the Hume Highway, Warwick Farm. THPC officers stopped the motorcyclist and the rider, a 28-year-old man, was issued an infringement notice for exceed speed limit more than 45km/h, and he was suspended from driving for six months.
- Another motorcyclist, a 27-year-old man, was fined and had his licence suspended after police allegedly detected him travelling at 136km/h in a signposted 80km/h zone, on Foreshore Road, Botany, about 4.10pm on Saturday.
- About 1.17am on Saturday (20 June 2020), THPC officers stopped a Toyota Corolla on Elizabeth Drive, Kemps Creek, after allegedly detecting the vehicle travelling at 113km/h in a signposted 60km/h zone. The 24-year-old driver, and sole occupant of the vehicle, was fined and he was suspended from driving for six months.
- About 10.15pm on Saturday, THPC officers detected a Volkswagon GTI sedan allegedly travelling at 138km/h in a signposted 80km/h zone. Police stopped the vehicle a short distance away and spoke to the P-plater driver, a 22-year-old man from Wagga Wagga. He was fined and his licence was suspended for six months.
“Traffic and Highway Patrol officers are out in force across the state. Speeding is not worth the penalty or risking lives,” said Assistant Commissioner Webb.
“Slow down, plan ahead and realise you’re not above the law and will be caught.”
