In March 2025, meetings were held between officers from Rural Crime Prevention Team (RCPT), National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) following reports of illegal hunting issues in the Kosciuszko National Park.
Following a multi-agency investigation, on Tuesday 26 May 2026, a 31-year-old man was charged with:
- Hunt game animal on private/public land without licence (four counts),
- Enter park or part of park closed to public (five counts),
- Have control of dog with hunting collar etc in park etc (four counts),
- Drive in park not have number plate etc as prescribed (three counts),
- Harm animal within national park or historic site,
- Drive in park with false/incorrect number plate etc.
Police will allege the man gained access to areas of the national park closed to members of the public and removed, and changed, the number plates on his vehicle to avoid being identified.
He was issued with a Court Attendance Notice to appear at Tumbarumba Local Court on Thursday 20 August 2026.
