Man charged wtih string of crimes over 24 hours

Colac Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a 20-year-old man with two aggravated burglaries and three burglaries allegedly committed on one night.

Police were called to a George Street address in Colac on Monday night following reports of two men breaking into an address about 11.30pm.

The two men allegedly ran from the scene when police arrived.

One of the men escaped after fleeing into bushland.

The second jumped into Barongarook Creek and climbed out the other side with an officer in hot pursuit.

The 20-year-old was apprehended by the fleet-footed policeman and taken into custody.

He was interviewed in relation to:

– A home invasion at George Street, Colac on 21 September

– An aggravated burglary at Jennings Street, Colac on 21 September

– Two burglaries in Bannockburn on 21 September

– An aggravated burglary in Torquay on 21 September

Detectives charged him with burglary, aggravated burglary, theft of motor vehicle and possess prohibited weapon.

The Roxburgh Park man appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday where he was remanded to re-appear on 22 January 2021.

A vehicle allegedly stolen during the Jennings Street aggravated burglary was spotted by police driving with no headlights and speeding on Sharps Road at Tullamarine about 11.30pm on Monday.

Police deployed stop sticks and two of the vehicle’s tyres were punctured however the driver still refused to pull over.

A pursuit was initiated and the vehicle pulled into a dead end street where the two occupants got out and were arrested.

The two men, a 21-year-old from Corio and 22-year-old from Lalor, were both arrested and charged with evade police, handle stolen goods, theft of motor vehicle.

They will appear before the courts at a later date.
