Man extradited from Victoria, charges laid after officer hit by stolen car at Albury, NSW

A man has been extradited from Victoria and charged after allegedly hitting a detective with a stolen car in Albury last month.

About 5pm on Sunday 31 May 2020, police approached a Mercedes in the driveway of a home on Burrows Road, Albury, after checks revealed the vehicle was stolen.

As a detective moved towards the vehicle to speak to the driver, he allegedly began to reverse at speed, hitting and dragging the officer along the driveway.

The officer managed to free himself under the open driver door. He sustained bruising and minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment.

It’s further alleged the Mercedes continued to reverse into an unmarked police car, before driving off along Burrows Road. A short pursuit was initiated, however, it was terminated due to safety reasons.

Detectives from Murray River Police District commenced inquiries into the incident.

Following extensive inquiries and a public appeal, a 19-year-old man was found hiding in a hotel room in Wodonga about 2pm yesterday (Monday 15 June 2020).

He was arrested by Victoria Police and taken to Wodonga Police Station.

The man appeared in Wodonga Magistrates Court this morning (Tuesday 16 June 2020), where NSW Police formally applied for his extradition to NSW.

The man was extradited this morning and taken to Albury Police Station, where he was charged with:

– Use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention

– Assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm

– Fail to stop and assist after impact cause injury

– Destroy or damage property

– Not give particulars to owner of damaged property

– Drive recklessly/furiously or speed manner dangerous (x2)

– Drive conveyance taken without consent of owner

– Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously

– Never licensed person drive vehicle on road.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in Albury Local Court today (Tuesday 16 June 2020).
