A man is due to appear in court today charged over the alleged assault of a police officer in Surry Hills.
About 11.15am yesterday (Tuesday 22 October 2019), officers attached to the North Central Transport Action Group had a man under arrest on Rutland Street, Surry Hills, for minor property-related offences.
A 46-year-old man – not involved in the initial incident – approached police but was directed to leave.
The man then allegedly shoulder-charged a female senior constable. Police attempted to arrest the man and a struggle ensued, during which the man and two officers fell to the ground.
A member of the public assisted police and the man was arrested and taken to Surry Hills Police Station.
The 29-year-old officer sustained injuries to her face, neck and shoulder after allegedly being punched repeatedly. She was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to St Vincent’s Hospital. She is expected to be release later today.
The Surry Hills man has now been charged with two counts of assault officer in execution of duty, resist officer in execution of duty, and wilfully obstruct officer in execution of duty.
He has been refused bail to appear at Central Local Court today (Wednesday 23 October 2019).
