Man refused bail over supermarket assault at Blacktown

A man has been charged after an employee was allegedly assaulted at a Blacktown supermarket yesterday.

Just before 6:30pm (Sunday 18 February 2024), a man entered the self-service area at a supermarket on Patrick Street and was stopped by an employee after reportedly attempting to leave the store without paying for items.

The man allegedly pushed the employee, a 64-year-old man, causing him to fall backwards and strike his head on the floor before leaving the store.

The injured employee was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital where his condition deteriorated; he remains there in a critical condition.

Officers attached to Blacktown Police Area Command commenced an investigation and, following inquiries, arrested a 25-year-old man at a Schofields home about 1.30pm today (Monday 19 February 2024).

He was taken to Blacktown Police Station where he was charged with reckless grievous bodily harm and two counts of larceny.

He was refused bail to appear in Blacktown Local Court tomorrow (Tuesday 20 February 2024).
